One of the projects we are most curious about in 2023 is Prime Video’s forthcoming Dead Ringers, starring Rachel Weisz (and, yes, Rachel Weisz) as a pair of twins with a penchant for sharing drugs and lovers while maybe getting up to some, er, less-than-ethical activities via their work in the medical field. A reimagining of David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller of the same name, we’re expecting this one to be something very special, indeed.
Today, Prime Video dropped the very first clip from the series, alongside a very eye-catching new poster. Let’s go through ’em, one at a time! First up, that trailer…
It’s a short clip, to be sure, but there’s plenty to be picked up on here: the notably different personalities of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, a general chilliness, a smidge of sardonic wit. It all feels very much of a piece with Cronenberg’s original, which told a similar but markedly different story wherein Jeremy Irons played both twins (by the way, if you’ve never seen the original Dead Ringers, you need to go watch it immediately without reading anything about it first; trust us).
Now let’s take a look at that poster:
Now that is a damn fine bit of key art. They’re certainly leaning into the color scheme of Cronenberg’s version, as well as the costuming. More importantly, it’s pretty great to see a new genre series getting a genuinely attractive poster. If Mondo released this as a collectible screenprint, it’d sell out within 30 seconds.
Here’s an official series synopsis, via Prime Video press release, should that please you:
A modern take on David Cronenbergโs 1988 thriller starring Jeremy Irons, Dead Ringers will feature Rachel Weisz playing the double-lead roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takesโincluding pushing the boundaries of medical ethicsโin an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring womenโs health care to the forefront. The seriesโ ensemble cast includes Britne Oldford (The Umbrella Academy, American Horror Story: Asylum) as Genevieve, Poppy Liu (Hacks, Better Call Saul) as Greta, Michael Chernus (Severance, Orange is the New Black) as Tom, Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty, Saint Maud) as Rebecca, and Emily Meade (The Deuce, The Leftovers) as Susan.
Nothing further to report on Prime Video’s Dead Ringers at this time, but we are dying to get a look at it and will keep you informed via further updates just as soon as they roll in. Stay tuned, and do mark your calendars for Dead Ringers‘ arrival on April 21st.
