INTRUDERS (2016)

Actor Rory Culkin is victimized by some dangerous Intruders in the new, brutal home-invasion thriller. FANGORIA spoke with the actor about the experience, and his time on the slasher sequel Scream 4 [Note: SPOILERS for that film] with the late Wes Craven.

In Intruders (reviewed here), Culkin plays Dan, a food deliveryman who appears to be the only friend of Anna (Beth Riesgraf), a young woman whose crippling agoraphobia prevents her from leaving her house. After her brother dies, three local thugs (played by Martin Starr of Dead Snow 2, Superbad and Freaks and Geeks, Jack Kesy and Joshua Mikel) break into the home in search of money Annaโ€™s sibling has left her, and Dan winds up being taken hostage as well. Culkin, whose first screen appearance was in a photo in his brother Macaulayโ€™s psychothriller The Good Son, has also done the genre thing in M. Night Shyamalanโ€™s Signs and Thomas Dekkerโ€™s upcoming Jack Goes Home, and soon begins filming the meth-fueled creature feature Welcome to Willets.

Was the experience of making Intruders as claustrophobic as it plays on screen?

Sort of, because we shot it in one house, and the whole crew had to fit in there. We did shoot on a set for the last two or three days, because they had to build the stair rig [in the basement] and all that. I mean, it would have been strange if the house already had a pre-built dungeon!

Did being stuck in those tight confines help you get into character?

Yeah, it was cool. I think I was the last actor to come on board, just days before shooting started, so I didnโ€™t have much time to dwell on it. That was sort of appropriate, though, because Dan doesnโ€™t have time to think about whatโ€™s going on, so I used that to my advantage.

Dan is probably the most complex character in the film; he starts out as a nice guy, but then you find out about his other side, and he becomes more conflicted.

What I liked about Dan was that he seemed to be the only human in it; the others are just monsters [laughs]. Theyโ€™re all terrible people, and Dan is the voice of reason; heโ€™s like, โ€œWe can stop this, we donโ€™t have to do this.โ€ Even when itโ€™s clearly far too late to stop it, heโ€™s still trying to defuse the situation. I guess you could see him as the weakest character, but I tried to find the strength in him saying, โ€œIโ€™m not like you guys.โ€

How was it working with Beth Riesgraf and director Adam Schindler?

I love Beth, and itโ€™s strange because sheโ€™s, like, angelic, and she was playing this part, and in the second half of the film you have to choose a side. Thereโ€™s no good guy, so itโ€™s interesting to see which side people take, and what makes them jump, who makes them jump. I thought she did it perfectly. And Adam and his partner, Brian [Netto], were really cool, creative dudes. Theyโ€™re horror guys and comic-book fans, and theyโ€™re fun. I just watched the film last night, and I was really impressed with the editing. The script was so much fun to read, and I was just hoping it would translate on screen, and I felt it did. I was very impressed with them.

Was there anything in the script that you didnโ€™t get to shoot, or that didnโ€™t wind up on screen?

Yeah, there was one thing I was actually looking out for last night while I was watching it, but I understand why it didnโ€™t make it in. I had the first line in a scene, so I was like, โ€œI can do whatever I want before I say my line,โ€ because there were a lot of people in the room. Danโ€™s leg was broken and I was on the floor, and it was just a moan; I was like, [lets out a long groan] before I said my line, and I milked it and stretched it out, trying to set a tone. But it didnโ€™t end up fitting, and I get that.

For you and also Riesgraf, playing such intense roles, were you able to turn it on and off between takes, or did you stay in character the whole day while you were shooting?

I have a hard time turning it off, so I try to stay in it all day. Other actorsโ€”and I wish I was like thatโ€”can turn it on and off, and Beth was sort of like that. You know, you want to be protective of your work, but you also donโ€™t want to be an asshole, you know what I mean? So thereโ€™s a fine line, and Beth is great at protecting her work politely. Some actors arenโ€™t; some actors bark, and I have a tendency to do that sometimes, but Iโ€™ve worked on that [laughs].

How about Martin Starr; did he cut up between takes, or did he stay serious on set?

Oh no, heโ€™s totally on-and-off. Heโ€™d be torturing someone, theyโ€™d call cut and then heโ€™d make a stupid joke. But then he would notice, like, โ€œOh, OK, some of these people are still into it.โ€ Itโ€™s a balance, itโ€™s collaborative. He was great.

Was the physical side of the role enjoyableโ€”playing in the fake blood and so forth?

Yeah, there was a lot of latex happening. I had never been so tortured in a film; they break my fingers and break my leg, it was rough [laughs]. Iโ€™ve been on the other end of that, like in Scream 4, where I was torturing people, and itโ€™s interesting, because that can be difficult too. If you really want to get into a part, you have to justify everything youโ€™re doing, and getting into the headspace where youโ€™re OK with hurting people can be challenging. Thereโ€™s a numbness to playing the victim that, surprisingly, might not be as hard.

What are your memories of Wes Craven from Scream 4?

He was awesome. Wes was such a quiet guy, and was totally there when you needed him, but he didnโ€™t really present a lot of direction, to be honest. He didnโ€™t just come out and give you instructions; it was only if you wanted it. So youโ€™d do your thing, and heโ€™d say, โ€œIf you need me, come to me and weโ€™ll have a discussion.โ€ I only had two or three of those conversations with him over the whole shoot, and it was so beneficial; it was like condensed direction. He will be missed.

Had you been a fan of his films before you did Scream 4?

Yeah, yeah. I saw all the Screams, the first one especially, and with Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich, you could just tell that he unleashed them, you know what I mean? Like, Lillard had it in him, and Wes was like, โ€œDo what you want,โ€ and then it was โ€œMy mom is gonna kill me, man!โ€ [Laughs] So, so good!

So when you were cast as a Scream 4 villain, did you feel you had a legacy to live up to?

Yeah, and I watched all three after I found out I was going to be the killer, and there were certain things I wanted to take from certain people, and others I wanted to avoid. I wanted to find my own reasoning for killing people, and also, I feel like often, when someoneโ€™s revealed as the villain, their reasoning is, โ€œBecause Iโ€™m crazy!โ€ and they act all insane, you know what I mean? I wanted to be human and explore, why am I crazy? Why am I killing people? You donโ€™t see it in the film, but in my mind, I was struggling. Every time I would kill someone, I would cry and feel bad about it. I felt I hadnโ€™t seen that in a Scream movie, a remorseful killerโ€”thatโ€™s what I was going for.

Were you ever behind the Ghostface mask for any of the kill scenes?

Not on camera, but I requested one for rehearsing, and when I wasnโ€™t shooting, I would walk on the side of the highway in the mask. That was fun.

Did you freak anyone out?

Yeah, because I also had a lot of blood on me for some scenes, and Iโ€™d be on the side of the road, and some guy would pull over and say, โ€œDo you need help?โ€ and Iโ€™d be like, โ€œNo, no, Iโ€™m fine!โ€ I pulled one gag after we wrapped up for a day: I was all bloody and went into a gas station. I charged in there, put my hands on the counter and said, โ€œWhat year is it?!โ€, covered in blood. And surprisingly, she was just like, โ€œOh, itโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ whatever year it was. โ€œItโ€™s 2010. You need Band-Aids?โ€ I just walked out, like, โ€œShe handled that so well!โ€
