Nearly five years after the original film became a sleeper hit in the summer of 2019, Ready or Not 2 is finally coming together. We only recently learned that the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence is working on a follow-up to the film. Now, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin have confirmed the news personally, while promising that the script, as it exists, is a fucking banger. If I may? Hell yeah.ย
The filmmaking duo recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly in honor of their new film Abigail, which hits theaters this weekend. During the conversation, they were asked about the recent news of a Ready or Not sequel being in development. While they were hesitant to put the cart before the horse, Gillett was not shy about praising the story that currently exists on the page. Hereโs what he had to say about it:ย
“It’s getting figured out. That’s what we’ll say: Ready or Not 2 is getting figured out. What we can say is that there is a script that is an absolute f—ing banger of a sequel. And however it gets made, and in whatever capacity we are helping get it made, we are so excited that it’s happening. That movie is truly the love of our creative lives in a lot of ways.”
The first film, for those who may need a refresher, follows a young bride (played by Samara Weaving) who is joining her new husband’s (Mark O’Brien) very wealthy, eccentric family. She is then asked to take place in a time-honored family tradition that quickly turns into a lethal game of kill or be killed. Weavingโs Grace did live to fight another day, soaked in blood with much to explain to the police. So there are many ways the story could go from there. Speaking further, Gillett explained that theyโre proud of the first film, but also proud of what they have planned for the proposed follow-up.ย
“I don’t think we knew after making it that there would be so much story left to tell. We’re so proud of what that first movie is, we’re so proud of what the sequel is. We’re just really excited, and fingers crossed that it gets made.”
“And with Searchlight and Samara, they’re not gonna let it down,” Bettinelli-Olpin added. Searchlight Pictures (formerly Fox Searchlight), released the first film in 2019. It made $57 million at the box office against a very modest $6 million budget. It also put Radio Silence on the map, with the filmmakers going on to direct 2022โs Scream, Scream VI, as well as the aforementioned Abigail. Ultimately, itโs Disneyโs call as to whether or not the sequel moves forward. But the first movie made money in addition to garnering very favorable reviews. So why not make it? Weโll see where the chips fall.ย
Ready or Not 2 does not currently have a release date but Abigail hits theaters on Friday.
