It seems the legendary Russell Crowe can’t get enough of exorcism movies, as the The Pope’s Exorcist star is set to star in another – unrelated! – tale of demons and disaster inย The Exorcism, formerly known asย The Georgetown Project.
Deadline, who reported the news exclusively earlier today, let us know that The Exorcism is directed by director, writer and actor Joshua John Miller (The Final Girls), written by Miller and M.A. Fortin, and produced by Scream‘s Kevin Williamson. The story follows:
…Anthony Miller (Crowe), a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter (Ryan Simpkins, Fear Street trilogy) wonders if heโs slipping back into his past addictions or if thereโs something more sinister at play.
Alongside Crowe and Ryan Simpkins, the cast of The Exorcism includes Sam Worthington (Avatar: The Way of Water), Chloe Bailey (Praise This), Adam Goldberg (The Equalizer) and David Hyde Pierce (Frasier).
Given that Julius Avery‘s Crowe-starring The Popeโs Exorcist made over $77M at the worldwide box office, it’s easy to see why anyone would want him battling demons front and center as star of their movie. And the man himself is clearly enjoying this particular niche; he’s very keen to get back in the saddle as Gabriele Amorth in potentialย Pope’s Exorcist sequels.
Vertical has picked up the North American rights to The Exorcism, releasing it in theaters on June 7, with Shudder bringing the film to streaming later this year. In a statement, Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey expressed his excitement for the project:
“Joshua has a profound expertise in this genre, and we applaud his creation of a film that reverently nods to classic horror while adding a fresh twist. We want to thank everyone at Miramax for their partnership and are looking forward to bringing the film to theatres nationwide this summer.โ
We’re always happy to see Crowe kick demon ass, so consider us hyped forย The Exorcism. We’ll bring you more news as and when we get it!
