Filming will commence on David Cronenberg’s latest cinematic mind-fuck, The Shrouds, in early May, which means the film is in the final stages of casting. Today brings news about another addition to the cast: Sandrine Holt (Better Call Saul, the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again) has officially joined the production, which already includes Guy Pearce, Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger. How’s that for a killer lineup?
The news comes to us from Deadline, who describe the plot of The Shrouds thusly:
“[The film] stars Cassel as Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. Karsh’s revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the international mainstream when several graves within his cemetery are vandalized and nearly destroyed, including that of his wife. While he struggles to uncover a clear motive for the attack, the mystery of who wrought this havoc, and why, drives him to reevaluate his business, marriage and fidelity to his late wife’s memory, as well as push him to new beginnings.”
Holt will apparently be playing “a mysterious woman, the wife of a billionaire, who contacts Cassel’s Karsh about a strange project involving her husband.” Sounds suspicious. I mean, you’ve gotta be somewhat suspicious whenever a billionaire’s involved, even if it’s via their betrothed. Our advice to Karsh? Watch your ass, buddy. You’re in a David Cronenberg movie.
As mentioned above, The Shrouds beginning filming on May 8th in Toronto, which means we’re probably a ways out from hearing anything regarding the film’s release date or when its first sure-to-be-disturbing first trailer will arrive.
