Fresh out of CinemaCon today comes the news that the horror parody film franchise Scary Movie is being rebooted by Paramount Pictures and Fast and Furious producer Neal H. Moritz.
Released back in 2000, Keenen Ivory Wayans’ 2000 Scary Movie took shots at slashers like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Friday the 13th. Across its five sequels, no horror movie was safe, with The Exorcist, Signs, The Ring, Saw, Ju-On, Evil Dead and Mama (to name but a few) all being parodied. Grossing $278 million on a $19 million budget, Scary Movie was a box office hit, although the rest of the series didn’t fare as well.
According to Variety, the new Scary Movie is going into production in the fall of 2024, and should hit theaters in 2025. News of plot or casting is still to be revealed, but hopefully any new instalment of the franchise will see the return of the iconic duo of Anna Faris’ Cindy and Regina Hall’s Brenda.
Variety also let us know that “Scary Movie is also being made as part of the Paramount’s first look partnership with Miramax, the studio behind the film franchise. Miramax will fully finance the production, with Paramount handling distribution. The indie label is a joint venture between Paramount and BeIN. Miramax recently announced that it has a new CEO in former MGM chief Jonathan Glickman.”
The last official Scary Movie, Scary Movie 5, was released back in 2013, and the horror landscape has changed significantly since then! Place your bets on what new tropes and genres get parodied – our money’s on ‘elevated’ horrors like Hereditary or The Babadook, the folk horror resurgence of Midsommar and The Witch, the reign of Blumhouse with movies like M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy‘s, and, of course, there’s a bunch of new Scream stuff to get extra meta with.
We’ll keep you posted on any and all Scary Movie updates as we get them!
