The good folks over at The Wrap have today revealed that Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to the classic British sci-fi novel The Day of the Triffids and are adapting the story into a miniseries.

John Wyndham’s original 1951 novel ‘tells the story of an alien invasion of Earth by a cloud of seeds that sprout sentient plants. A large portion of the population, meanwhile, has been blinded by a meteor shower in preparation for the invasion.’

The tale is noted for its themes of man-made horror and human interference in bioengineering and science, so it makes sense that Johan Renck (Chernobyl) is attached to direct

The Wrap tells us that Amazon Television is ‘developing the property as a series of miniseries, detailing the invasion from multiple points of view in multiple cities’, so you could see Triffids to terrorize your city, no matter where you are in the world.

Angry Films’ Don Murphy (Splice) and Susan Montford (Vampire Academy), and Preger Entertainmentโ€™s Jillian and Dennis DeFrehn are executive producing.

The Day of the Triffids has been adapted multiple times in the past, perhaps most famously as the 1963 film version and 1981 television series, and most recently with a BBC television drama starring Eddie Izzard and Dougray Scott. The novel has been an inspiration to countless sci-fi and horror stories since its publication, with Annihilation’s Alex Garland naming it the inspiration for his 28 Days Later screenplay.

Further Triffid details such as casting and release date are still unknown, so keep those eyes peeled for more updates as we get them (just uhh, don’t go staring at any green meteor showers).
