We’ve known for some time now that Neve Campbell will be coming back for Scream 7, which is currently in the works at Paramount following the success of the recent sequels. However, very little has been said about the film by way of specifics. Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream, is stepping into the director’s chair, which is exciting but that’s about all we do know. Any information at this point is most welcome. To that end, Campbell has confirmed that the new installment in the classic slasher franchise will go back to being a Sidney Prescott story.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Campbell spoke about the forthcoming seventh installment. “We are going to follow Sidney,” she offered. “They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board.” So it sounds like this is going to be more akin to the original trilogy, rather than 2022’s Scream where Sidney was more of a legacy character in the mix with the new batch. Campbell also shared her appreciation for the franchise’s enduring nature.
“I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades.”
Guy Busick, who was involved in the previous two installments, penned the screenplay. While no other cast members have been confirmed at this time, it was reported earlier this year that Courteney Cox is in talks to return as Gale Weathers for the latest sequel. Campbell sat out Scream VI following a pay dispute with the studio. Speaking on that topic, the actress reflected, saying she’s grateful to have stood up for what she thought was right.
“I’m super grateful that they came around on it. [Scream VI] just didn’t feel right. I couldn’t after this many decades of carrying a franchise, to feel undervalued and underpaid and to know that it wouldn’t have happened to a man in that way. It just wouldn’t make sense for me to walk on that set. So, I’m glad I stood up for myself.”
The plan for Scream 7 has changed a fair amount along the way. Melissa Barrera was dropped from the project last year, and Jenna Ortega soon followed by exiting her role. Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) was supposed to direct, but that fell through as well as the nature of the sequel shifted under his feet. That’s how Paramount circled back to Campbell, finally, rightfully offering to pay her what she’s worth. We’ll see how it all shakes out as things begin to come together.
