SCREAM VI (2023)

It appears as though ol’ Ghostface has a lot of juice left in the tank, or so recent rumblings at the box office would suggest. Scream VI hit theaters earlier this month and topped the charts with a franchise-best debut of $44 million. But that was just the tip of the iceberg, as the film has kept the bucks rolling in even as competition from the likes of Shazam! Fury of the Gods and John Wick: Chapter 4 has invaded theaters. In fact, it’s done so well that in its third weekend, the latest entry in the long-running slasher franchise has already passed its predecessor.

Scream VI added $8.3 million to its growing total domestically over the weekend, bringing it to $89.8 million in North America. Meanwhile, it’s taken in an impressive $49.4 million overseas for a grand total of $139.2 million. That means it has already overtaken the entire global total of Scream 2022, which finished its run with $138.8 million. And let’s be very clear: last year’s movie was a huge success, given that it was made on a $24 million budget. That’s precisely why Paramount and Spyglass put the sixth entry on the fast track. Momentum is very much in their favor, it would seem.

The latest entry in the franchise moved the action to New York City and focused on the surviving members of 2022’s Woodsboro massacre making a go of it in the Big Apple. Naturally, a new Ghostface shows up to spoil the fun. Critics and audiences have been kind to Scream VI, which has helped to give it good legs at the box office. If things keep going the way they’re going, it may overtake the original Scream ($173 million) to become the highest-grossing entry in the series ever. Horror is alive and well, folks! It’s really only a matter of time before Paramount announces Scream VII at this point. This has become a matter of “when,” not “if.”

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the cast for the sixth entry is led by Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy Meeks-Martin), Mason Gooding (Chad Meeks-Martin), Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter), Hayden Panettiere (Kirby Reed) and Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers), reprising their roles from the past. The ensemble also includes newcomers Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra and Samara Weaving.

Scream VI is in theaters now.
