Lovers of shark-centric horror movies rejoice as we’ve got another entry in the subgenre coming our way from someone who knows it quite well. In this case, we’re talking about Johannes Roberts, the man who directed and co-wrote both 47 Meters Down and 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, two of the more successful mainstream shark movies to come about in recent memory. Now, he’s teaming up with Allen Media Group Motion Pictures for a new picture titled The Red Triangle, and it sure sounds like the body count is going to be much, much larger this time around.
According to Deadline, Roberts will direct the film from his own script. No word on casting or how soon production could begin just yet, but James Harris and Mark Lane are on board as producers, with Byron Allen, Carolyn Folks, Jennifer Lucas, Chris Charalambous and Matthew Signer set as executive producers. As for the story at hand? The report shared a synopsis along with some backstory on the title, which reads as follows:
“Set in Northern California — famous for its gorgeous beaches, but also known for a particular stretch of ocean that has a bloody reputation — The Red Triangle. Stretching south from Bodega Bay toward San Francisco and jutting out beyond the Farallon Islands and down to Big Sur south of Monterey, the Triangle encompasses around 200 miles of coastline, and is the site of almost half of all recorded great white shark attacks in the United States. When a cruise ship — a massive, floating, fully stocked resort with thousands of passengers — begins to sink in The Red Triangle, the feeding frenzy begins.”
Roberts said of his next shark-centric feature, “The Red Triangle is going to take shark horror to a whole new level. I cannot wait to work with Byron [Allen] again to terrify audiences like they’ve never been terrified before.” Meanwhile, Byron Allen, Allen Media Group’s Founder, Chairman and CEO, had this to say about it:
“The Red Triangle is well-positioned to be a big summer event movie. This shark-filled psychological horror/thriller will once again have moviegoers overwhelmed and on the edge of their seats watching great white sharks methodically terrorize a sinking family cruise ship.”
Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, undoubtedly, remains the unquestioned king of shark movies. Behind that, we can perhaps look to Deep Blue Sea for the silver medal spot. Outside of that, the picture becomes far less clear. What we can say for sure is that Roberts, who also directed Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and The Strangers: Prey at Night, has done well in this space. 47 Meters Down earned favorable reviews and more than $62 million at the box office against a budget of less than $6 million. The sequel, 2019’s Uncaged, made just shy of $48 million against a $12 million budget. Admittedly, it sounds like this is going to be a bigger, more expensive feature, and one that figures to bring a great deal of carnage to the table.
The Red Triangle does not yet have a release date set.
