Last night was a big night for horror gamers, with Sony’s State of Play and Konami’s Silent Hill Transmission both revealing new information about the upcoming Silent Hill 2 ย remake – including a release date of October 8, 2024.
Following the first Silent Hill Transmission all the way back in 2o22 when the remake, fromย The Medium developers Bloober Team, was announced, updates and new footage have been somewhat thin on the ground. But last night’s transmission showcased almost 14 minutes of gameplay, teasing some of the game’s most iconic scenes.
The footage (seen below) included a better look at game protagonist James Sunderland, other characters including the mysterious Maria, Angela and little Laura, levels like Brookhaven Hospital and, most terrifyingly, a good look at monsters like the Bubblehead Nurses, Abstract Daddy and Flesh Lips.
The game’s iconic soundtrack, by musician Akira Yamaoka, has also been given a revamp, and sounds even creepier than ever.
The transmission also teased that a Deluxe Edition of Silent Hill 2 will be available to order, that includes a digital art book by art director and creature designer Masahiro Ito, a digital copy of Yamaoka’s soundtrack with new tracks and classics, as well as 48-hour early access to the game
Theย Silent Hill 2 Deluxe Edition also includes exclusive items that James can wear in-game, including a pizza box Pyramid Head, and Mira the Shiba Inu and Robbie the Rabbit masks (Robbie being a PlayStation 5 exclusive)
Some of the team at Bloober also made an appearance during the Transmission, with Maciej Gลomb, Lead Producer at Bloober, addressing the challenge of remaking a game with such a passionate fanbase:
โI think the biggest challenge that weโve had [developing the remake] was actually how to make the game approachable for newcomers who have not played the original […] But at the same time, to still retain the familiarity of the game that players remember from 20 years ago.โ
Konami’s originalย Silent Hill 2 hit PlayStation 2 consoles back in 2001, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest psychological horror games of all time. Due to its intense content and sensitive themes, fans have understandably been concerned about how a remake would fare, but from the looks of the footage we’ve seen so far, it seems Bloober are committed to honoring the original while bringing it forward into the modern age.
Pre-orders for Silent Hill 2 are now open on Steam and the PlayStation Store – see you and your restless dreams in that town on October 8…
