If you’re looking for something to watch this evening – whatever evening it happens to be that you’re reading this – it should certainly be the trailer for Space Sharks. Yes, this is a real movie and, what’s more, if this trailer sparks your morbid curiosity enough, it’s a movie that is available to watch on VOD as we speak. It’s not a big-budget studio movie with a wild premise like Cocaine Bear. Rather, the folks at Wild Eye Releasing have cooked up something more akin to the low-budget Cocaine Shark, only with cheap CGI sharks from outer space.
Oh boy, where to begin here. The whole thing kicks off in space, as one might expect, with things going awry on a space station, leading to some unholy creations arriving on Earth. You guessed it! They’re man-engineered sharks with special abilities designed to kill. It’s kind of like if Predator fell into a blender with the ‘90s animated series Street Sharks. And if said monstrosity somehow got an Oscar-nominated actor involved. We’ve also got the official poster, which you can check out below. It’s truly a work of art unto itself, boasting the tagline, “They don’t need water to kill!” 10//10. No notes. The synopsis for the film reads as follows:
“A military experiment conducted on a space station goes horribly wrong, sending a new breed of weaponized sharks to earth with only one mission: destroy everything in their path!”
The film is the work of director Dustin Fergoson, whose filmography also includes such works as Apex Predators and Spider Baby. As mentioned, there is an Oscar-nominee involved as Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, The Expendables) is on board. The cast also includes Scott Schwartz (A Christmas Story), Vida Ghaffari (Moon of the Blood Beast), Mel Novak (Game of Death) and Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre).
Whether or not this is worth one’s time beyond the trailer is certainly a matter of individual taste. These low-budget offerings do catch on from time to time. Let us not forget that Birdemic ended up sparking an entire B-movie trilogy. Sometimes, a wacky premise is enough. Sometimes, that’s a recipe for fun with the right group of people. When these things go right, we get such gems as The VelociPastor. So watch and judge for yourself, dear reader. We are merely the messengers.
