Get ready to return to the world of Starship Troopers this fall. Would you like to know more? Developer Offworld announced during IGN Liver over the weekend that the long-awaited video game Starship Troopers: Extermination finally has a release date. Mark your calendars as the game will arrive for both console and PC on October 11. But that’s not all, as we got a new trailer and a lot of new information about the game, including the return of Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico.
Given that Extermination was first announced for early access more than a year ago, it’s high time that the general public has the chance to get their hands on it. The new trailer offers a fun look at the violent and action-packed gameplay. It looks very loyal to the universe of the movies, with the bugs extra mean and players tasked to take them out. Even if multiplayer games aren’t your thing, there’s good news on that front as well.
Offworld also announced that Casper Van Dien will return as Johnny Rico as part of a single-player game mode. The actor originated the role in 1997’s Starship Troopers. We got a brief tease of that at the very end of the trailer. The campaign will see players tapped for an elite spec ops group who will be following the orders of Rico. They’ll have the aid of three original NPC allies across 25 missions. The developer also teased that a second chapter will be added after the 1.0 launch. The official synopsis for the game reads as follows:
“Starship Troopers: Extermination is a pulse-pounding co-op first-person shooter. Join the Deep Space Vanguard, an elite Special Forces branch of the Mobile Infantry, in the fight against the Bug menace and claim victory for humanity! Your trusty Morita Assault Rifle, support tools, and fellow Vanguard Troopers are all that will keep you alive while exploring the hostile surface of these ugly planets, these… Bug planets.”
The only real problem that Offworld faces with this game is the fact that Helldivers 2 has since come along and gained a great deal of popularity. The game has very strong Starship Troopers vibes and the gameplay in the multiplayer doesn’t look all that dissimilar, broadly speaking. But the single-player mode is a big factor here, so hopefully the two can find a way to co-exist.
