BAD THINGS (2023)

According to Variety, the good folks at Shudder have acquired Stewart Thorndike’s Bad Things ahead of the film’s imminent debut at the Tribeca Film Festival. Thorndike’s film, which she also scripted, “tells the story of a group of friends whose trip to a snowy resort for a weekend getaway devolves in a psychological tailspin and ends in a bloody nightmare.”

That might sound like yet another standard-issue slasher tale, but it’s clear Thorndike is up to something a bit more complicated here. Says the director:

โ€œWith Bad Things, I wanted to create a world of women and non-binary people who shake off polite conditionings and finally roar. Where are all the female Travis Bickles and Jack Torrances? Bad Things answers that.โ€

Thorndike goes on to add that โ€œAt the heart of Bad Things is a dark celebration of motherhood and all its splendid viscera. Shudder was the perfect partner for this tale of female rage.โ€

Says Sam Zimmerman, Shudder’s VP of Programming:

โ€œWeโ€™ve wanted to see a new Stewart Thorndike film for years. When the opportunity arose, Shudder was privileged to take part in Bad Things. Itโ€™s an exceptional freakout from an incredible team, and we canโ€™t wait for our members to check in.โ€

Bad Things stars Gayle Rankin (the dearly-departed Glow), Hari Nef (the upcoming Barbie), Annabelle Dexter-Jones (Succession), Rad Pereira (Betty), Jared Abrahamson (Ramy) and – last, but certainly not least – the iconic Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club). Thorndike’s film will hit Shudder and AMC+ on August 25th.

We’re very curious what Thorndike’s up to here, and will be keeping our eyes peeled for further updates on Bad Things. Stay tuned for those, and for the love of God: stop going to remote cabins with your friends! It never ends well!
