We’ve still got a couple of seasons left to spend in Hawkins with the Stranger Things gang, but plans are already in motion to keep the franchise rolling after the main series ends. Details are currently being kept tightly under wraps, but series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have teased their idea for a spin-off, and they promise that it is going to be very different than what fans have come to know from the wildly popular ’80s throwback sci-fi series.

The Duffer brothers recently spoke with Variety in anticipation of the fourth season’s release on Netflix later this week. During the conversation, the subject of this spin-off came up, and the duo revealed that they haven’t written the idea yet but that it will be surprising. They also shared that Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike on the show, is the only one who knows what they’re up to, since he rightly guessed their mysterious plan.

“We do have an idea for a spin-off that we’re super excited aboutโ€ฆ but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it. We think everyone โ€” including Netflix โ€” will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it’s very, very different. But somehow Finn Wolfhard โ€” who is one crazy smart kid โ€” correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”

That opens up a whole world of possibilities, and quite frankly, if it’s that different, any speculation will probably be fruitless at this point. Even with Stranger Things ending, it was hard to believe this was truly going to be the end. The Duffer brothers even hinted at this in a previous statement when it was revealed that season 5 would conclude the main series.

“There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down. As always, we are grateful for your patience and support.”

There is much to be done before this spin-off can come to fruition. Season 4 has been split into two parts, with the episodes about as long as your average movie – if not longer. Not to mention that an entire fifth season needs to be written, shot, and released before Netflix need concern itself with a spin-off. Fans of the show clearly have no need to worry as it sounds like this cow will be milked for all its worth well beyond the main show’s conclusion.

Stranger Things season 4 premieres on May 27 on Netflix.
