A welcome surprise for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers today as last year’s Dead Island 2 has been added to the service. The game was released in April of last year after being delayed many, many times over the years. Now, it’s available for a large pool of potential new players at no extra cost. If you subscribe to the service, all you need to do is long on, download the game and start killing some zombies.
The drop came as a surprise but was confirmed by publisher Deep Silver in a blog post on the game’s official website. “With the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate version, you’ll have unlimited access to the base game on Xbox, including co-op functionality. So, there’s no need to go it alone – gather your squad and take on the horde together in thrilling co-op action!” the blog post reads. So yes, not only is the game available, but you can play with friends online as well.
Xbox Game Pass is sort of like Netflix but for video games. Users pay a monthly fee and can play any games available on the service at that time. The other nice thing is that people can subscribe to the service on PC as well, so it’s not purely limited to Xbox owners. Games rotate in and out to keep things fresh. It currently costs $16.99 per month, but free or very cheap trials are readily available for those who want to get in on the action.
Here is the official description of Dead Island 2.
“Dead Island 2 is a thrilling First-Person, Action RPG takes players across a brand-new playground – a hellish vision of LA (or HELL-A, as we like to call it). Dead Island 2 is stylish, vibrant and flooded with zombie infection. Explore iconic, gore-drenched Los Angeles. Meet larger-than-life characters. Slay countless foes in exquisitely bloody detail. And evolve to become the ultimate Zombie Slayer!”
The first story expansion for the game was released in November of last year. Deep Silver has yet to reveal the full plans for the next expansion, but it will be titled SOLA Festival and it is expected to arrive sometime this summer. With the game’s addition to Game Pass, you’ll have plenty of time to get caught up with the main story before that DLC drops.
Dead Island 2 is available now on Xbox Game Pass. Those without an Xbox can grab a copy of the game for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, or PC.
