Last night, horror author F. Paul Wilson hopped on Twitter to make a very special announcement…

Yes, that’s right: nearly 40 years after Michael Mann helmed an adaptation of Wilson’s The Keep, special FX legend Greg Nicotero has secured the rights to mount his own adaptation of the novel. This is good news for Wilson, who is on record as not being a fan of Mann’s film; it’s also good news for all of us, because Greg Nicotero whips ass and we love the idea of him adapting this property. It’s a win-win, all the way around!

For those unfamiliar with The Keep (either the novel or the Mann film), here’s a very solid plot synopsis via the good folks at Bloody Disgusting:

โ€œWhen an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve a problem in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps, the men find something thatโ€™s both powerful and terrifying. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims.

The Nazis bring in a local expert on folkloreโ€•who just happens to be Jewishโ€•to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his wayโ€•a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny.

The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the otherโ€ฆthe unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowing terror that man has inevitably awakened.โ€

Obviously, we don’t have much to go on beyond Wilson’s tweet; there’s no telling when we’ll see Nicotero’s version, or whether it’s being made for television or the big screen. No matter! We’re hyped about this, anyway, and will keep you informed with further updates on The Keep as they roll in. Stay tuned, folks!
