PEARL (2022)

Ti West’s X has remained firmly planted in the upper echelon of our favorite movies of 2022, so the news of West’s upcoming project centering on Mia Goth’s Pearl for a titular prequel has us all abuzz. X introduces us to Pearl when her youth is but a distant memory, a lost echo mirrored back to her when she’s confronted with a group of sex-positive youths. West plunges us into hag horror territory and raises the horrifying concept of what happens when the world deems us “too old to f**k.” But before Pearl became our favorite psycho biddy, she was full of dreams and vigor and yes, the X factor. Pearl takes us back for the origin story of X‘s iconic villain. Let’s take a look at the official synopsis.

Filmmaker Ti West returns with another chapter from the twisted world of X, in this astonishing follow-up to the yearโ€™s most acclaimed horror film. Trapped on her familyโ€™s isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like sheโ€™s seen in the movies. Pearlโ€™s ambitions, temptations, and repressions all collide, in the stunning, technicolor-inspired origin story of Xโ€™s iconic villain.

And now, prepare to feast your eyes on the technicolor prequel horror:

Exploding guys, big dreams, the revelation that Pearl has always been a fan of a little pitchfork action, and perhaps some aquatic horror for good measure! Lots to be excited about here, and we can’t wait. She wants to be loved by you. And we have no doubt Pearl is going to win us over.

Starring Mia Goth, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro, catch Pearl in theaters September 16, 2022. In the meantime, check out our X interview with West and Co. and get a behind-the-scenes look at Goth’s transformation into Pearl.
