Barbershop and Ride Along director Tim Story brought a new movie to last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, a horror-comedy by the name of The Blackening, and – based on the reviews that made their way online in the wake of that screening – the film is a winner, legitimately scary and funny in equal measure.
What’s The Blackening about? Here’s a plot synopsis:
“The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherfucking game.”
That sounds like The Blackening has the potential to be very good, indeed, and today’s just-released trailer (which lays out the plot in a bit more detail alongside a few effective visual gags and spooky moments) seems to indicate the same. Take a look, see what you think…
The Blackening was co-written by Girls Trip‘s Tracy Oliver and Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Dewayne Perkins, and stars Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, Yvonne Orji, and former SNL cast memberย Jay Pharoah. We’re expecting this one to make quite an impression when it hits theaters on June 16th (Juneteenth Weekend, just like in the movie!), and we’ll be keeping our ear to the ground for further updates on this one between now and then. Stay tuned for those, folks!
