After three main films and five spin-offs, The Conjuring universe is set to expand even further as Deadline have announced today that a drama series is en route from franchise creator James Wan and producer Peter Safran. The series is in development for Max (previously HBO Max), Warner Bros. Discovery’s newly combined streaming service announced earlier today.
According to Deadline, The series will “continue the story established in the feature films”, presumably following the cases of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (made famous cinematically by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) as they come head to head with all manner of demonic terror across the USA (and sometimes in the UK too).
Wan’s Atomic Monster Productions and Safran’s The Safran Company will produce in association with WBTV, and Wan is also in talks to executive produce too.
With seven films (The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) under its belt, The Conjuring franchise is currently sitting pretty as the highest-grossing horror franchise to date. Having collectively grossed more than $2B at the worldwide box office, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that more Conjuring media has been ordered.
We’ve also got The Nun 2, starring Taissa Farmiga and Storm Reid coming this September 8, plus The Conjuring 4 currently in development. Hopefully these two upcoming features, plus the newly-announced series, will appease fans after the cancellation of The Crooked Man, a much desired spin-off that sadly never made it off the ground.
