Netflix has released a brand new teaser trailer for Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance. Daniels, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind acclaimed movies such as Precious and The Butler, is back with a new feature and this time, he’s going the horror route. Not just horror mind you, but this is Butlers’ take on the exorcism genre! Exorcism films have been big lately, with Russell Crowe leading not one but two different ones over the last year. Now, we’re getting one from one of the most heralded directors working today. What does that look like, exactly? Check it out.

The teaser doesn’t waste a second before getting to the creepy stuff, with the opening shot of an ominous house on a stormy night. We then get the equally ominous line, “Whatever it says to you, do not listen to it,” to further help set the tone. It then delves into the exorcism at the heart of this story before reminding us, the audience, that this is inspired by an allegedly true story. That always packs a certain punch when dealing with forces such as the Devil. It kind of nails the art of the teaser by giving us enough to get interested without giving the whole thing away.

“Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children.”

Andra Day, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in Daniels’ The People vs. Billie Holiday, leads the cast as Ebony. The ensemble also includes Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), Mo’Nique (The Reading), Anthony B. Jenkins (Roswell, New Mexico), Miss Lawrence (Star), Demi Singleton (Godfather of Harlem), Tasha Smith (Empire), Omar Epps (The Devil You Know), Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things) and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Origin).

Aside from the trailer, we’ve also got a new poster for the film that you can check out below. David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill) and Elijah Bynum (One Dollar) penned the screenplay. Daniels serves as a producer on the film alongside Tucker Tooley, Pamela Oas Williams, Jackson Nguyen and Todd Crites. Jackie Shenoo, Hilary Shor, Greg Renker and Gregoire Gensollen are on board as executive producers.

The Deliverance arrives in select theaters on August 16 and on Netflix on August 30. For more, be sure to check out our list of the scariest exorcism movies around
