The first trailer for David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer has arrived, and it serves up just about everything you might want out of an Exorcist trailer: a possessed little girl (two of ’em, actually! More possessed bang for your buck!), a “Tubular Bells” needle drop (you know they had to do it to us), and – last, but certainly not least – the return of Ellen Burstyn’s Chris MacNeil, who first encountered these forces of darkness all the way back in 1973, in William Friedkin’s iconic The Exorcist.
We’ll get to the trailer in just a moment. First, an official plot synopsis:
“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett,ย Good Girls) on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn).”
Alright, let’s take a look at the goods…
This is David Gordon Green’s latest foray into the horror genre, following the new trilogy of Halloween films that he completed just last year. Here he’s working from a script he co-authored with Peter Sattler, based on a story created by Green, Scott Teems, and Danny McBride, and from what we can see here Green certainly has a handle on this franchise’s iconography. We’re very curious to find out how the latest entry in the Exorcist series plays out, and are particularly excited to see Burstyn brought back into the fold. Consider us intrigued!
Can David Gordon Green and company capture lightning in a bottle with this new trilogy of Exorcist films? It’ll be a while before we can say for sure, but we will have a much better read of the situation when The Exorcist: Believer hits theaters on October 13th. Stay tuned for further updates on this one as they roll in, folks!
