David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer is one of the year’s most highly-anticipated horror movies, but it’s also one of the year’s biggest question marks: can the filmmaker behind the new Halloween trilogy bring a second dormant horror franchise back to life on the big screen? Can any Exorcist film ever hope to match the skin-crawling terror of William Friedkin’s 1973 original? We’re excited to find out, and won’t have to wait too much longer – this one hits theaters in early October.

Today brings us a new trailer for The Exorcist: Believer, one that shows off a fair amount of the film’s possession hijinks. From where we’re standing, they look creepy as hell.

It’s exciting to see Ellen Burstyn returning to the role of Chris MacNeil, and the possessions themselves look downright harrowing (“Mommy, I don’t want to go to Hell” is a great line). We’re very excited to see how all of this plays in context when the film hits theaters in October.

Here’s an official plot synopsis:

“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscarยฎ nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own.

But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia Oโ€™Neill), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.”

Nothing further to report on The Exorcist: Believer at this time, but rest assured we’ll have plenty more updates for you between now and the film’s arrival in theaters on October 6th. Stay tuned!
