The original Dead Island set you loose on a fictional island dotted by small towns, luxurious resorts, all manner of craftable gear, and – last, but certainly not least – a seemingly inexhaustible supply of zombies to slash, shoot, and burn your way through. Was it the deepest game, narratively-speaking? Absolutely not. Was it enormously satisfying to play? You bet your ass.

This week, Deep Silver will release the long-awaited and highly-anticipated Dead Island 2, which relocates the action to the sunny state of California. Judging by this newly-released launch trailer, the folks behind the game have used that change in location to their great advantage. Just look at everything going on in here (and, yeah, it’s one of those trailers you gotta click through to see, sorry):

We won’t know until we’ve got a controller in our grubby little mitts, but from where I’m standing Dead Island 2 looks to be just as fun, frenetic, and knowingly ridiculous as the original. A truly eye-popping number of locations can be glimpsed in this trailer (did you catch the movie set, complete with a gigantic green screen and an even more gigantic spider monster?), and the sheer variety of weapons on display has me downright fiending to get back in the game.

As previously reported, Dead Island 2 lands on the Epic Games Store, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series on April 21. That’s my weekend plans sorted.
