A24 has released the first trailer for its latest horror flick The Front Room. This one has a lot going for it, most notably because it makes the feature directorial debut of the Eggers brothers, aka Max Eggers and Sam Eggers. These are the brothers of one Mr. Robert Eggers, the director behind films such as The Witch and The Northman. Now, they’re stepping behind the camera for what looks to be a wild one involving the mother in law from hell. Just how literal is that depiction? Watch the trailer and judge for yourself.
So yeah, that looks like a classic bad time with the inlaws. There’s a lot going on here. At first, the mother in law in question just seems like kind of a jerk before she emerges as a blatant racist. Things escalate from there in some pretty wield directions. It looks like another entry in the realm of bombastic religious horror, right alongside this year’s Immaculate from NEON. We’ve also got a new poster for the film, which you can check out below. The official synopsis reads as follows:
“Everything goes to hell for newly-pregnant Belinda (Brandy) after her mother-in-law (Kathryn Hunter) moves in. As the diabolical guest tries to get her claws on the child, Belinda must draw the line somewhere…”
Sam Eggers and Max Eggers may be stepping behind the camera for the first time, but they’ve been hanging around the business for a while. Sam previously wrote 2018’s Olympia while working on the crew for The Witch. Max, meanwhile, co-wrote The Lighthouse, which was also directed by Robert Eggers.
The cast includes Brandy Norwood (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Andrew Burnap (Under the Banner of Heaven), Neal Huff (Beach Rats) and Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things). Max Eggers and Sam Eggers also penned the screenplay, which is based on the short story of the same name by Susan Hill. Lucan Toh, Babak Anvari, David Hinojosa and Julia Oh are on board as producers.
A24 is no stranger to genre storytelling. Aside from their collaborations with the Eggers brothers, the studio is also behind hits like Hereditary, It Comes at Night and last year’s breakout hit Talk to Me, which is getting a sequel. They were also behind Ti West’s X trilogy, with the third installment MaXXXine, which hits theaters in July and also graces the cover of the latest issue of Fango.
The Front Room hits theaters on September 6. For more, be sure to check out our list of A24’s top ten scary movies.
