Tomorrow, Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench arrives in theaters, and with it comes the promise of seeing many people eaten by gigantic sharks – a time-honored tradition for the summer movie season. What could be more fun to watch while inhaling a giant bag of hot, buttered popcorn in a darkened, air-conditioned movie theater?

While you’re waiting for the weekend to roll around, the good folks at Rotten Tomatoes have debuted a brand-new clip from Wheatley’s film, one which showcases a bit of Meg 2: The Trench‘s shark attack action.

Let’s take a look:

Goddamn! Those paddleboat occupants never stood a chance! While their untimely death is certainly the star of this particular clip, we’re still kinda dumbstruck to watch footage from a big, would-be summer blockbuster about giant sharks that was helmed by Kill List and High-Rise director Ben Wheatley. While it appears he has taken to the task with aplomb, it’s still genuinely wild to see Wheatley working this far out of his comfort zone (which usually involves horrific things unfolding on a much smaller scale). To say we are curious would be a massive understatement.

In Meg 2: The Trench

“Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) leads a research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Pitted against colossal, prehistoric sharks and relentless environmental plunderers, they must outrun, outsmart and outswim their merciless predators.”

In addition to Statham, Meg 2 also features global action hero Wu Jing, The Meg‘s Sophia Caiย andย Page Kennedy,ย Sergio Peris-Mencheta,ย Skyler Samuels and – last, but certainly not least – the greatย Cliff Curtis. They’re all working from a script (based on the Steve Alten novel The Trench) from Dean Georgaris and Jon & Erich Hoeber, the latter of whom wrote the script for the first Meg movie.

Will Meg 2: The Trench live up to the action-packed, enjoyable absurdity of the 2018 Jon Turtletaub original? We certainly hope so; the FANGORIA staff canceled its trip to the beach to check it out. See you at the movies, gang!
