A few weeks back, Warner Bros. brought the first trailer for Ben Wheatley’s The Meg 2: The Trench to CinemaCon, giving theater owners, industry types and attending press members their first good look at this long-awaited sequel (believe it or not, the original The Meg hit theaters all the way back in 2018). The crowd’s response? A resounding “Holy SHIT.”
The rest of us have been waiting to get a look at that trailer ever since, and today I am pleased to report that the wait is over: The Meg 2 trailer has arrived, and it’s ever bit as “Holy SHIT”-inducing as the folks at CinemaCon claimed it to be.

This trailer opens with a T-Rex getting its head bitten off by a Megalodon and only ramps up from there. Creatures hunting humans in a deep sea trench. A beach full of vacationers getting annihilated by multiple Megs. Jason Statham doing quips. This looks like an absolute blast, and obviously we will be there the minute it opens.
Worth noting: Ben Wheatley tackling a big-budget, would-be summer blockbuster like this is truly something to see! Over the past decade or so, Wheatley has firmly established himself as a guy who knows how to scare the hell out of audiences, but he’s largely done so in creeping, slow-burn horror movies that wear their comparatively limited budgets as a badge of honor. We loved Kill List, A Field in England, and 2021’s In The Earth, but each of those is a far cry from the budget and scope that Wheatley’s working with here. It’s exciting to see him take on a movie like this!
This time around, returning star Jason Statham (as rescue diver Jonas Taylor) joins forces with action star Wu Jing as they “lead a daring research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Pitted against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, our heroes must outrun, outsmart, and outswim their merciless predators in a pulse-pounding race against time.”
From where we’re standing, this one looks like a lot of fun, and we’re excited to see how Wheatley’s sensibilities translate to a big, fun popcorn movie like this. Stay tuned for further updates on The Meg 2 between now and the film’s arrival in theaters on August 4th.
