Just as Dracula is about to get his own modern day revamp, another classic Universal Pictures horror is getting a fresh coat of paint: today, Deadline have revealed exclusively that the studio have acquired a pitch from Chris Winterbaur (Wyrm) for a reimagining of the 1956 hollow earth horror, The Mole People.

The upcoming film (for which we don’t yet have an official title for) will be produced by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, with Winterbaur also writing the script. Deadline tells us more about the story – and reminds us of the original – here:

In the new take, a woman travels to a town veiled in a conspiracy, to rescue her grandchildren from their father. To do this, she must fight through hell in the underground tunnels where the Mole People reside. In the 1956 original, archaeologists stumble into the underground lair of a race of darkness dwellers who can see in low light and have no pigmentation after being out of the light for so long. The high priest who rules the small pocket of mole people is threatened by the newcomers and wants them dead.

Dave Alpert at Skybound, and Universal execs Holly Goline, Jay Polidoro and Matt Reilly are also overseeing production alongside Kirkman.

The original The Mole People was written by Lรกszlรณ Gรถrรถg and directed by Virgil W. Vogel in his directorial debut, after a career in editing other Universal Pictures flicks including Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man and Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil. The film starred John Agar, Hugh Beaumont and Cynthia Patrick.

Nothing else is yet known about The Mole People remake, but don’t worry, we’ll keep you updated on all the groundbreaking (get it) developments as we get ’em.
