According to Variety, Bleecker Street has snapped up the rights to distribute Andrew Cumming’s Stone Age horror film, The Origin (retitledOut Of Darkness), with an eye towards releasing the film later this year.
It sounds very cool:
“Set more than 45,000 years in the past, the horror pic follows a disparate gang of early humans who band together in search of a new land. But when they suspect a malevolent, mystical being is hunting them down, the clan is forced to confront a horrifying danger they never imagined.”
That’s a great setup! It’s also intriguing: will the “malevolent, mystical” and “horrifying” being that’s hunting our heroes down actually turn out to be a supernatural foe? Or will it turn out to be, say, a rabid mountain lion with strange markings in its fur? What sort of weaponry will these early humans have to work with? We’re intrigued by everything going on here, and look forward to learning more.
Variety goes on to point out that The Origin was nominated for five British Independent Film Awards, with star Safia Oakley-Green scoring a win for “Best Breakthrough Performance.” It was written by Run‘s Ruth Greenberg and is being produced by Saint Maud‘s Oliver Klassman.
Nothing further to report at this time, but Bleecker Street will be releasing this one “fall-winter” of this year. Stay tuned for further updates on The Origin between now and then, gang!
