THE THING 2002 Game

Good news, horror gamers – Nightdive Studios are remastering the John Carpenter-approvedย third-person survival horror shooter The Thing forย Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and the Nintendo Switch later this year.

Originally released back in 2002 by Computer Artworks and Black Label Games,ย The Thing was playable on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, and Xbox, and fans were sorely disappointed when a planned sequel never materialized.

The Thing: Remastered is set as a direct sequel to the 1982 Carpenter classic (John himself even has a cameo in the game), following Army Special Forces soldier Captain J.F. Blake. Kotaku reminds:

He and his rescue team are sent to investigate the aftermath of what happened in the original โ€˜80s horror film directed by John Carpenter. Of course, things go poorly and Blake is forced to fight the icy weather, growing paranoia among his squad, and the nasty alien monsters that lurk in the Antarctic base.

Now onto the technical stuff, which our friends over at Bloody Disgusting have put so eloquently: “Nightdive has upgraded the game for the modern era through its proprietary KEX Engine for play on current-generation gaming devices, including 4K resolution at 120FPS. The Thing: Remastered will also sport updated character models, textures, and animations, with the implementation of advanced 3D rendering for updated lighting and atmospheric effects.”

Nightdive are no strangers to the remaster game, having cleaned up a whole host of classics such asย Quake, Doom 64 and theย Turok series.

Larry Kuperman, Nightdive Studiosโ€™ Director of Business Development, had this to say of their latest endeavor:

โ€œMany of us at Nightdive Studios are ardent fans of the horror genre, so itโ€™s been an incredible honor to work within the world of the iconic The Thing […] The 1982 film is a masterpiece and truly one of the most impactful pieces of art in the horror genre. With The Thing: Remastered, weโ€™re honoring that legacy and Computer Artworksโ€™ incredible game inspired by the story that further expanded the lore.โ€

The Thing: Remasteredย hits platforms later this year. In the meantime, here’s a trailer for the shiny new gameplay:
