Last week, Macon Blair’s The Toxic Avenger held its world premiere in Austin, TX, at this year’s Fantastic Fest. The entire FANGORIA team was on hand to bear witness to this highly-anticipated remake’s very first screening, and … well, what can we say? The Toxic Avenger more than lives up to the legacy of the Troma movie that inspired it: tasteless jokes, shocking gore effects, subversive social commentary – it’s all there, and then some.
We’re not sure when the rest of you will get a chance to see The Toxic Avenger (the film has yet to be given a release date), but while we’re waiting on that information to roll in, why not watch the film’s first (red-band) teaser trailer? It does a pretty damn good job conveying all the madness that awaits audiences.
Check it out:
See what we mean? This movie is absolutely bananas, true to the spirit of Lloyd Kaufman’s 1984 original yet distinctly modern in its sensibilities. Its very game cast (which includes Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood) really go for broke on this one, and Blair’s screenplay gives them plenty of unhinged material to work with. The effects are great, as well, a healthy mix of CGI and practical work, with Toxie’s look being a particular standout.
Here’s an official plot synopsis:
โPeter Dinklage stars as downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze who, after falling into a vat of toxic waste, becomes none other than The Toxic Avenger. This timely reimagining is up to its eyeballs in environmental themes as Winston goes up against the evil forces of greed and corruption to save his son, his friends, and his community.โ
Again, we have no word on a release date for The Toxic Avenger at this time, but do stay tuned for further updates on that front as they roll in. We’re expecting to hear something sooner rather than later!
