Kurt Wimmer’s long-delayed Children of the Corn is finally on its way to theaters (technically for the second time, but we’re not counting that brief run the film had in a handful of Florida movie theaters circa mid-2020), and today we’ve been gifted with the film’s very first trailer. A red-band trailer, to be precise – this one ain’t holding back on the gore.
We’ll get to the trailer in just a second, but first things first: Wimmer’s Children of the Corn is, as you’ve already surmised, based on the Stephen King short story of the same name … though it might be more accurate to say that Wimmer’s film is based on the mythology established by that short story, given that this ‘go-round operates more as a prequel to the events of that tale.
Let’s take a look:
Y’know what? Why not? Speaking as the co-host of a long-running Stephen King podcast, this writer knows all too well how many Children of the Corn movies there are. More specifically, I know how many of them are not very good! The trailer above obviously represents only a fraction of the runtime for Wimmer’s version, but from where I’m standing, this one looks worth checking out. If nothing else, they seem to be having a lot of fun with the kills!
As for this one being a prequel, here’s the official plot synopsis, which oughtta clear up any questions you might have about that:
Possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield, a twelve-year-old girl in Nebraska recruits the other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival.
RLJE Films is dropping the new Children of the Corn in theaters on March 3rd, with the film also slated to hit On Demand and Digital come March 21st. Given how long it’s been since we’ve seen a new Stephen King movie land in theaters (wherefore art thou, the new ‘Salem’s Lot?), I think I’m gonna have to go theatrical on this one. I’m particularly curious to find out what might’ve caused this one to be released unrated! Here’s hoping the answer is “lots and lots of blood.”
Stay tuned for more on the new Children of the Corn as further updates become available.
