Thomasin McKenzie (Last Night in Soho, Old) and Zoë Kravitz (The Batman) are set to lead Self-Portrait, an upcoming psychological horror from director Mona Fastvold (The World To Come).
Deadline revealed the news exclusively today, as well as giving a plot synopsis which sounds pretty damn terrifying:
The movie will see grieving photographer Lu Rile (McKenzie) move to a run-down artists’ warehouse in 1990s Brooklyn where she befriends Katherine (Kravitz), an accomplished painter who lives downstairs. When Katherine suffers her own tragic loss, Lu unknowingly captures the incident in one of her self-portraits, generating a sublime but horrifying image. Consumed with by mutual grief and an intensifying relationship, the women find themselves haunted by a demonic force hellbent on shaking their realities.
The film is based on Rachel Lyon’s debut novel Self-Portrait With Boy, with a script co-written by Fastvold and Vox Lux‘s Brady Corbet. Executive producers are Ryan Heller, Jennifer Westin and Michael Bloom for Topic Studios, alongside Corbet and Fastvold and Brian Young. Hayley Theisen serves as co-producer.
Production on the arty horror is due to start later this year, with WME Independent will launching international sales at Cannes late this month.
Self-Portrait will be the latest string to McKenzie’s genre bow, one that includes M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho, and the upcoming psychological thriller Eileen. Kravitz was of course last seen in 2022’s The Batman, and recently wrapped her directorial debut Pussy Island.
