About a year ago, we learned that Lionsgate was resurrecting its wildly successful Twilight franchise in the form of a TV series. At the time, the project was said to be in its “infancy,” with no names attached to the project beyond the fact that it would be scripted by The Walking Dead: World Beyond‘s Sinead Daly.
We’d heard nothing about the Twilight TV series since, but today brings an update: according to Variety, the project is still very much in play … but is now an animated series.
Says Variety:
“Michael Burns, vice chairman of Lionsgate, shared the news during a Q&A at the Morgan Stanley media conference on Tuesday, revealing, ‘Weโre going to go out with theย โTwilightโย series, an animated series, I think thereโll be a lot of interest in that.’โ
Didn’t see that one coming, but then again, this makes a sort of sense: the Twilight novels were initially adapted into a series of live action movies (which raked in a collective $3B at the worldwide box office). Once that franchise ran its course, Stephanie Meyer went on to publish Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined, which gender-swapped its two leads. A few years after that, she published Midnight Sun, which retold the events of the first novel from the perspective of Edward. In short, we’ve already seen a number of variations on the Twilight saga, so why not an animated version?
Still no word on when the Twilight series might arrive (or which streamer or network might be picking it up), but rest assured we’ll keep you informed as further updates roll in. Stay tuned, folks.
