To celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of Twilight, director Catherine Hardwicke recently attended a special screening held at Los Angeles’ Los Feliz 3. Following the success of Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown, Hardwicke signed on to take the vampire romance from the page to the big screen, essentially making an indie film that turned into a massive blockbuster and spawned a cultural phenomenon. It’s been panned and parodied, but there’s no denying it speaks to fans. And new fans are coming to it every year.
During the post-screening Q&A, Hardwicke shared that initially, the story appealed to her because she was excited about the idea of making a movie with vampires running around in trees and walking around in daylight. Moving the night walkers from darkened London alleyways to the forests of the Pacific Northwest was the biggest selling point. That combined with what she described as the excitement and ecstasy of coming of age and the rush of experiencing first love. The earliest versions of the script featured jet skis and high-speed FBI chase sequences that were notably… nowhere to be found in the book. Hardwicke was adamant that a movie adaptation should remain faithful to why fans fell in love with the novel, and is no doubt why the franchise continued into a five-movie series with a rabid fanbase.
