Hong Won-ki, the director behind South Korean horror anthologies Urban Myths and Goedam, is set to direct Unnie, a Black Swan-esque thriller set in the cutthroat world of K-pop.
Deadline, who reported the news exclusively earlier today, let us know that Unnie (which means “older sister” in Korean) will be released via new genre label Badlands, and is based a script from Lynn Q. Yu
Hong is no stranger to the K-pop world, having founded Zanybros, South Korea’s #1 music video production company, alongside videographer Kim Jun-hong. K-pop artists Sunshine and Moonshine are creating Unnie‘s original soundtrack.
Producing Unnie are Badlands’ Scott Strauss, Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Renegade Capital’s Andrew Schwartzberg and Jon Shiffman, and Desert Bloom’s Jennice Lee.
In a statement, Strauss explains why Hong is the only man for the job:
“After meeting the Zanybros in Korea, it became clear they are uniquely plugged into the K-pop world and will deliver on the authenticity its fans demand. Director Hong’s eye-popping videos and passion for genre make him the only choice for our film.”
Casting for Unnie is currently underway, and production will begin in Seoul and Los Angeles later this year.
Here at FANGORIA we’re always keen for more Korean horror, so will be waiting to bring you updates on Unnie as and when they dance in.
