Sony’s Until Dawn movie seems to be moving along quite nicely. Based on the 2015 survival horror PlayStation video game of the same name, director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) is at the helm for this one. Now, we have word that the project has rounded out its cast, including a voice that should sound familiar to those who have played the game.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maia Mitchell (Good Trouble), Belmont Cameli (Saved by the Bell) and legendary character actor Peter Stormare (Constantine) have been cast in the film. They join an ensemble that also includes Ella Rubin (The Girl from Plainville), Michael Cimino (Annabelle Comes Home), Ji-young Yoo (Smoking Tigers) and Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser). Filming is set to begin later this month. To add to the intrigue, Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun), is on board as a writer and producer as well.

Dr. Hill in Until Dawn

Most crucially, Stormare played the important character Dr. Hill in the game. While Sony has yet to outright confirm it, it’s believed that’s precisely who he’ll be playing in the film as well, which is pretty neat. We first learned that Until Dawn was getting the cinematic treatment in January. Fortunately, Sony hasn’t let this one languish in development hell. For those who haven’t played the game, the synopsis reads as follows:

“Eight friends are trapped together on a remote mountain retreat, and they aren’t alone. Gripped by dread, with tensions running high, they must fight through their fear if they all hope to make it through the night in one piece. Play as each of the eight characters and experience fear like you never have before. Every decision you make in your terrifying search for answers could mean the difference between life and death, but for whom? Your actions alone will decide who survives Until Dawn.”

While Sony has yet to reveal any plot details for the movie, one assumes it will follow a similar trajectory. After spending several years on the Shazam! films for Warner Bros. and DC, Sandberg decided he wanted to head back to the world of horror. He said as much in a statement to THR about his upcoming video game adaptation.

“I’ve been longing to do horror again after Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, and this film explores the many great subgenres of horror to create the most terrifying experience possible. Capturing the essence of the game but with new characters, it serves as a great stand-alone introduction to the world for the newcomer as well as offers something new that the fans of the game will enjoy.”
