UZUMAKI

It’s been a very long, long time coming, but Adult Swim’s much-anticipated Uzumaki anime from Hiroshi Nagahama (MushishiThe Flowers of Evil) finally has a release date and a brand new twisty teaser trailer.

The news was revealed at San Diego Comic Con earlier today that Uzumaki will finally hit Toonami on September 28.

Based on his manga of the same name, the Uzumaki series will adapt a classic piece of cosmic horror fiction from legendary mangaka Junji Ito.

Uzumaki‘s plot synopsis reads as follows:

Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral—the hypnotic secret shape of the world. The bizarre masterpiece horror manga is now available all in a single volume. Fall into a whirlpool of terror!

Initially announced all the way back in 2019, Uzumaki underwent numerous delays due to the pandemic, with Nagahama and the animation team restructuring the project entirely. According to Nagahama: “the way we are making this anime is requiring twice as much staff as we normally use.”

The release date follows the recent announcement of Uzumaki‘s English voice cast at Anime Expo. The Japanese and English voice cast on the bill include:

  • Kirie Goshima – Uki Satake / Abby Trott
  • Shuichi Saito – Shin-ichiro Miki / Robbie Daymond
  • Azami Kurotani – Mariya Ise / Cristina Vee
  • Kirie’s Dad – Toshio Furukawa / Doug Stone
  • Shuichi’s Dad – Takashi Matsuyama / Aaron LaPlante
  • Shuichi’s Mom – Mika Doi / Mona Marshall
  • Katayama – Katsutoshi Matsuzaki / Max Mittleman
  • The series will be the first Uzumaki adaptation since Higuchinsky’s live-action film released during the ‘J-horror boom‘ of the early 2000s.
