For those who haven’t had the chance to see the film in theaters yet, fear not! Lionsgate has announced that The Strangers: Chapter 1 is headed home. Director Renny Harlin’s reboot of the horror franchise will be available to purchase on VOD beginning Friday, June 7. Or, if you’re reading this as of the date of its initial publication, tomorrow. Mark your calendars and plan accordingly.

The film will first be available to purchase digitally for $25 from a variety of retailers including Amazon, Google Play, Apple TV and more. Typically, there is an option to rent the film for $20 or buy it for $25 when new films hit VOD. In this case, it appears that viewers will be limited to a $25 digital purchase option. That may change though. Anyone interested can find purchase links through the film’s official website

For lovers of physical media amongst you, Lionsgate will also be bringing Chapter 1 to Blu-ray later this year. While the studio has not set a release date, there are pre-order links for physical copies of the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on the website. It will be available via Amazon and Walmart for sure. Best Buy and Target are getting out of the physical media business so these things are becoming harder and harder to come by out in the wild, unfortunately.

This is just the first chapter in a brand new Strangers trilogy. Harlin directed all three installments, all of which were filmed at once. Lionsgate has yet to set a release date for The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3, but they’re expected to arrive in the coming months. Harlin has also teased that he might make a super cut of all three films that would run 4.5 hours. The official synopsis for Chapter 1 reads as follows:

“After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in The Strangers: Chapter 1, the chilling first entry of this upcoming horror feature film series.”

As for what Harlin will do next? The director of Deep Blue Sea is attached to return to the realm of shark-based horror with a new movie called Deep Water. That one doesn’t have a release date yet but once his work on this trilogy winds down, the expectation is that he’ll turn his attention to that one.
