It’s been a long time since we heard anything about Adult Swim’s Uzumaki, an animated series adaptation of Junji Ito’s legendary cosmic horror manga. Finally, over the weekend, a year since the project’s delay, a brand new trailer was revealed at San Diego Comic Con – and it looks very promising indeed.

Directed byย Hiroshi Nagahama (Mushishi), the Uzumaki series will follow Ito’s Uzumaki manga series, three volumes first published in 1998 following “high-school teenager, Kirie Goshima, her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, and the citizens of the small, quiet Japanese town of Kurouzu-cho which is cursed by supernatural events involving spirals.”

Uzumaki‘s creepy music comes from Hereditaryโ€™s Colin Stetson.

When the adaptation was first announced, Adult Swim/Toonami’s creative director Jason DeMarco expressed his excitement:

โ€œAs a huge fan of Junji Ito, Iโ€™m thrilled to be able to tackle one of his signature works, with a team of amazing creators who are all equally devoted to doing justice to this monumental work of horror manga.”

We don’t yet have a release date for Uzumaki (which was originally meant to be with us in err, October 2022), but from the looks of this trailer we’re well on our way to entering the spiralled town. Keep an eye out for updates and, of course, don’t forget our very own FANGORIA Studios is joining forces with Ito for an upcoming adaptation of Bloodsucking Darkness!
