The Hollywood Reporter has a lengthy new interview with director James Wan (Malignant, the Conjuring franchise) and Jason Blum (Blumhouse), one that touches on a variety of fun topics.
For instance: the gestating merger between Wan’s Atomic Monster (which produced Malignant) and Blumhouse. Pressed as to whether or not the success of Malignant was a motivating factor in pursuing the merger, Blum says, “It’s always a motivating factor for me. I get very nervous anytime James does a scary movie without me. I get very upset.” Understandable!
The entire interview’s worth reading, but one moment – right there at the very end of the piece – caught our eye. Here’s the exchange, in full:
“THR: Speaking of Leigh Whannell, The Invisible Man set up an ideal way into an Invisible Woman sequel, but nothing’s come of it despite strong reviews and box office. So who do we hold accountable for this injustice?
Blum: Well, it’s a great question. (Laughs.) I think we mostly hold me accountable, but hopefully, should our dreams come true and our two companies get to work together, maybe James will help me solve that problem.
Wan: I’d be more than happy to.”
Intriguing! Blum seems to be suggesting that the Atomic Monster/Blumhouse merger needs to happen before an Invisible Man sequel can move forward, and further suggests that he’d like Wan involved to help make it happen when the time comes. We’d love to see a sequel to Whannell’s 2020 film, so if rooting for this merger to go down is what it takes to get that done, well, we’re rooting for it all the way.
