Today brings us the first trailer for Ryan Stevens Harris’ Moon Garden, which is headed our way later this year from the good folks over at Oscilloscope Laboratories, and boy are we excited by what it has to show us. Dreamlike, nightmarish, wondrous, and sinister all at the same time, this trailer just propelled Harris’ film up near the top of our “Most Anticipated of 2023” charts.
First, a plot synopsis…
Following a terrible family accident, a young girl slips into a coma, finding herself thrust into a dark and surreal industrial wonderland. Haunted by a chattering nightmare that feeds off her tears, the little girl must follow her mother’s voice on a transistor radio to find her way back to consciousness.
And now, the trailer:
According to Oscilloscope, Harris shot Moon Garden “on expired 35mm film stock with vintage rehoused lenses,” which certainly explains the graininess of the images above, as well as drawing out the whole hand-made feel of the film. Harris seems to have thrown every trick in the book at this one, incorporating elements of stop-motion animation, decrepit industrial sets, intricate model work, gorgeous (and/or freaky) lighting, and even a kaiju-sized rhinoceros into the proceedings. Consider us highly intrigued by whatever the hell is going on here!
As of this writing, there’s no word on when we might see Moon Garden beyond the fact that it’ll arrive sometime in 2023, but you can rest assured we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for further information and updates, and will have those ready for you just as soon as they pop up on our radar. Stay tuned, everyone!
